We use a Classical style of homeschooling and Tapestry of Grace curriculum. Part of that is what is known as narration, where a child tells the parent what she has read in her own words. Its really gratifying to see how a child grows in her ability to narrate.
My youngest child was probably average when she started narrating. She forgot big parts of the story and there were lots of “ummmms” and “uhhhhs” in her narration. But as the years went on, she became more animated, with facial expressions even and remembered most all of the story she had read.
Today, it is a treat to listen to her tell about what she has read. She stops to make comments and witty observations about the characters as she speaks. The best part is that I know she is learning! And as long as I supply her with good reading material, she is learning good information that will help her all her life and broaden her world.
This is why I homeschool!

I was never conscious of the uuuhhhs until I took a speech class. I notice it a lot more, and try to be careful.
