For aphids, mealybugs, mites, scales and thrips ~
Soap Spray
Mix one tablespoon dishwashing soap in one gallon of water. Test by spraying a few leaves. If there is no resulting damage to the leaves, spray the whole plant.
Ammonia Spray
Mix one part household ammonia with 7 parts water.
Oil Spray
Stir one tablespoon of liquid dish soap into one cup of vegetable oil such as peanut, safflower, corn, soybean or sunflower. Mix 1-2 teaspoons of the soap and oil mixture with one cup of water and drizzle over affected plants.
Red Pepper/Oil Spray
Blend in a food processor or blender:
6 red peppers
1 tbsp vegetable oil or mineral oil
Strain the mixture into 3 cups hot water and one tsp liquid dishsoap.
Cap and shake thoroughly. Put into a spray bottle, spray plants liberally bothon top of leaves and under leaves.
For Fungal Diseases like powdery mildew or blackspot
Mix one easpoon baking soda in one quart of warm water. Add one tespoon liquid dishwashing soap. Apply to the leaves or drench the whole plant.
Attract Predator Bugs
To attract predator bugs - the kind that eat other insects - spread plants like these around your garden: allysum, asters, daisies, marigolds, sunflowers, yarrow, parsley, fennel, dill.
To Repel Rabbits
All of these have to be re-applied after a rain.
Sprinkle black pepper around the plants.
Plant French marigolds around your garden.
Spread cut human hair around your plants.
To Repel Deer
Build a 10 foot high fence. JK LOL!
Sharpen both ends of a 3-4 foot tall sturdy stick. Shove one end into the ground and impale a bar of Irish Spring soap on the other end. Place these around your garden. The “human” odor will usually repel deer.

Thanks for these great ideas. I’m bookmarking this page for later use….

These are great. We are having a problem with mildew/white powder and I can’t get rid of it, even with commercial products.
I have had to take out four plants already and another one needs to come out. It has now spread to my cantaloupe.
You have to be really vigilant with the homemade remedies. Use them every day, sometimes twice a day. And often, you need to take a piece of soft cotton and dip it in the homemade insecticide and apply it to each little patch of powdery mildew.
I hope you have success!
Sylvia
Thanks Sylvia!! I’m definately bookmarking this one!
